Abodi is cow reed — a traditional Nigerian beef offal cut that shows up in search a lot ("abodi meat," "abodi in english") because it's hard to find outside African grocers and hard to explain once you do. Here's what it is, whether it's halal, how to cook it, and where to buy it in the UK.
What Is Abodi?
Abodi is the Yoruba name for cow reed, a lean beef offal cut prized in Nigerian cooking for its chew and its ability to soak up pepper soup and stew flavours. It's sold frozen and cleaned, ready to cook — no separate prep needed before it goes in the pot. We stock it as Frozen Cow Reed (Abodi), in 1kg, 2.5kg and 5kg packs.
Is Abodi Halal?
Yes. Abodi is halal, along with the rest of the beef and offal we sell (roundabout, liver, kidney, cow feet). Only three things in our range are not halal: shaki (cow tripe), Nigerian dried cow meat (agemawo/tinko/kundi) and Seasoned Smoked Goat Meat.
How to Cook Abodi
- Rinse the abodi under cold water once defrosted.
- Pre-boil with onion, a stock cube and a little salt until tender — this usually takes longer than muscle meat, so give it time.
- Add it to pepper soup, stew or a spiced broth once tender. It's built to carry flavour, not carry it alone, so season generously.
- Cook until piping hot throughout, as with any offal or meat.
Abodi vs Other Beef Offal
Abodi is often confused with roundabout (beef intestine) — they're different cuts with a different bite. If you're stocking up on offal, see our guide to what roundabout meat is for the comparison, or browse the full Frozen Meat, Fish & Poultry collection to see everything side by side.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is abodi called in English?
Abodi doesn't have a single common English name — it's usually described as cow reed or beef reed, a beef offal cut. Most UK butchers won't stock it by any English name, which is why it's mainly available through African grocers.
Is abodi the same as tripe?
No. Tripe (shaki) is cow stomach; abodi is cow reed. They're different cuts with different textures, and — unlike abodi — shaki is not halal in our range.
How long does frozen abodi take to cook?
Pre-boiling usually takes 45-60 minutes until tender, depending on the pot and quantity, before it goes into your soup or stew.
Can I buy abodi in bulk?
Yes — the 5kg pack and our Trade Club terms cover catering and event quantities.
